Washington University’s Continuing & Professional Studies has partnered with the United Way to offer a Fundamentals of Nonprofit Management Professional Certificate. This program is offered to current nonprofit professionals tuition-free.

The nine-week certificate will provide valuable tools and techniques to drive impact and growth in nonprofit organizations. Participants will deepen their understanding of key areas such as governance, strategic planning, financial stewardship, and workforce and talent development. The program will be fully online and asynchronous, with periodic check-ins and assessments after each course. A final capstone assessment will occur at the end of the nine weeks. A formal Certificate of Completion ceremony will take place on the Washington University campus in mid-to-late November 2024.

The program will accept 20 non-profit professionals from organizations funded through the United Way. The first cohort will begin the week of September 9, 2024, and will run for nine weeks. Participants will be expected to spend approximately four hours per week on the coursework. Participants will spend three weeks on each of the following topics:

  • Principles of Management in Nonprofit Organizations: Explore key strategies for effective leadership, governance and organizational development to successfully lead in the nonprofit sector.
  • Strategic HR Practices in the Nonprofit Sector: Gain insights into recruiting, retention and talent development tailored to the unique needs of diverse community-oriented organizations.
  • Financial Management in Nonprofit Organizations: Master the art of financial stewardship in the nonprofit sector, learning essential skills to manage budgets, funding sources, and risk.

Each course will require approximately 12 hours to complete or 4 hours per week. The entire program will require approximately 36 hours of work. The completion of this program will award 3.6 CEUs to participants, which is the equivalent of 36 hours of work.
